For me personally, it has definitely caused me to become a lot more interested in psychology, especially that of criminals. Criminal Minds also raises awareness to jobs in law enforcement and can spark many people’s interest in possibly taking up a profession in a similar area.

The show gives you a new perspective on how to look at things that you would never have thought to consider before. I find myself captivated by the way that the BAU pieces together information, and it sometimes causes me to make better connections in my own life. The thought process behind catching intelligent and complex criminals is a very intriguing one. Society’s interest in crime shows has definitely increased over the past few decades and Criminal Minds makes a great contribution to it. While some people may find these inaccuracies as negative and misrepresentative of the actual BAU, I think that the show still does a great job in showing the analytic process. Most of these differences are probably to make the show more interesting and adventurous, but fast paced enough so that the episodes are nicely formatted by a new case per episode. The agents in Criminal Minds travel to new locations constantly, and most of their work is shown to be in the field. Also, criminal psychologists spend 90% of the time in the FBI headquarters in Quantico, only venturing into the field about 10% of the time. Most of them are solved over the span of a few days in Criminal Minds, however in the real world these cases can take months or even years. One of the major inaccuracies is how quickly the cases are solved. In the real FBI, there is no such thing as a “profiler ” they’re actually known as criminal psychologists. No matter what kind of case it is, the BAU can find some way to piece together the information they gather into something that makes sense.Īlthough there are very skilled agents like these in the real FBI, Criminal Minds isn’t exactly a true representation of what this job is actually like.
I see it like solving a puzzle which is super cool.
The BAU is very skilled in taking in numerous clues around them, ones that ordinary law enforcement may not notice, and forming them to create the profile. One of the reasons why I really like Criminal Minds is because of how deeply and uniquely they analyze the mind of the unsub. This keeps the show very interesting because with new locations comes different settings, types of criminals, and different strategies to solving crimes. The BAU is always in a new location, flying all over the country to provide their expertise. Every episode starts with the introduction of a new case, and each is usually solved by the end of the episode.
